Prayer, fasting and almsgiving

Make time for Scripture and prayer, help those in need and choose a practical act of self-denial. In the Latin Church, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting and abstinence. Fasting generally applies to Catholics aged 18–59, and abstinence from meat applies from age 14.

For fasting rules and exemptions where you live, check the guidance from your bishops’ conference or diocese.
