Life and vocation

Born in New York, she married William Seton and raised five children. After his death, she entered the Catholic Church in 1805. Her move to Maryland opened a new chapter of teaching and community life.

Faith in action

In Emmitsburg she founded the Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph’s in 1809. Their schools and care for children joined education to practical charity. Her vocation grew through family responsibilities, bereavement and service.
