Life and vocation

Born in Spain, he worked with Teresa of Avila in the Carmelite reform. Opposition led to his imprisonment in Toledo, where part of his poetry took shape.

Faith in action

His works include the Spiritual Canticle and the Dark Night. Their language of purification points toward a love that moves beyond attachment and self-interest. The Church recognizes him as a Doctor of the Church and a teacher of contemplative prayer.
