For Latin Catholics in most of the United States, December 8, 2026, December 25, 2026 and January 1, 2027 are holy days of obligation. They celebrate the Immaculate Conception, Christmas and Mary, Mother of God. The dates fall on Tuesday, Friday and Friday, so the Saturday or Monday rule does not remove the obligation. Hawaii is an exception: January 1 is not a holy day of obligation there. A Mass on the evening before each holy day also counts.
The three dates at a glance
| Date | Celebration | Mass obligation in the US? |
|---|---|---|
| Tuesday, December 8, 2026 | Immaculate Conception | Yes, including Hawaii |
| Friday, December 25, 2026 | Christmas | Yes, including Hawaii |
| Friday, January 1, 2027 | Mary, Mother of God | Yes, except in Hawaii |
These are additional to the ordinary Sunday obligation. The USCCB's 2027 liturgical calendar, which begins in November 2026, identifies all three celebrations and explains Hawaii's exception in note 4. Keep the December 2026 US calendar handy while planning travel or family visits.
December 8, 2026: The Immaculate Conception
The Immaculate Conception celebrates Mary being preserved from original sin from the first moment of her conception. It does not refer to Jesus' conception. The USCCB lists it as the patronal feast day of the United States, a solemnity celebrated in white vestments.
In 2026, December 8 is a Tuesday during Advent and is a holy day of obligation. A Catholic Mass on Monday evening, December 7, can satisfy it. Check your parish bulletin early, especially if your workday makes a daytime Mass difficult.
December 25, 2026: Christmas on a Friday
Christmas is a holy day of obligation in the United States, including Hawaii. Attending Mass on Thursday evening, December 24, or on Christmas Day satisfies the obligation. The Christmas 2026 US page places the celebration in the calendar.
Because Christmas is a solemnity, the usual Friday abstinence rule does not apply that day. Canon 1251 provides this exception when a solemnity falls on a Friday. There is no need to avoid meat at Christmas dinner because of that Friday rule.
January 1, 2027: Mary, Mother of God
The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God falls on Friday, January 1, 2027. It is a holy day of obligation in most US dioceses, and a Mass on Thursday evening, December 31, can satisfy it. Hawaii's separate rule means January 1 is not obligatory there.
The Archdiocese of Newark's calendar and explanation confirm the US rule: the obligation is lifted when January 1, August 15 or November 1 falls on a Saturday or Monday. It does not apply to these Friday dates. January 1 is also a solemnity, so canon 1251's Friday abstinence exception applies.
Does a vigil Mass count?
Yes. Canon 1248, section 1 allows the obligation to be fulfilled by attending Mass in a Catholic rite on the day itself or on the preceding evening.
Look for your parish's holy day schedule rather than assuming its normal weekday times apply. Parish websites, bulletins and diocesan directories are good starting points. This guide does not set a universal clock time for an evening Mass; ask the parish if a particular service is unclear.
Hawaii and other exceptions
The USCCB calendar records Christmas and the Immaculate Conception as Hawaii's only two holy days of obligation beyond Sundays. That is why the January 1 answer must include the Hawaii exception, even though the feast remains a solemnity.
This article follows the US Latin Church calendar. Other Catholic Churches and countries may have different obligations. If you are outside the US, consult your bishops' conference or diocese; the general liturgical calendar gives dates, rather than a country-specific list of obligations.
What if you cannot go?
Illness and caring for an infant can be serious reasons excusing attendance, as the Catechism, paragraph 2181, explains. An unavoidable duty of care may also make attendance impossible. Your pastor can help you understand your circumstances and any dispensation.
If you cannot attend for a serious reason, set aside time for prayer as you are able. Canon 1248, section 2 recommends prayer or an available celebration of the Word when Mass is impossible. You do not need to put someone in your care at risk to follow a calendar.
Other dates people ask about
December 6 and 13 are Advent Sundays, with the normal Sunday Mass obligation. December 12, Our Lady of Guadalupe, is a feast in the US calendar, not an additional holy day of obligation.
In the United States, Epiphany is celebrated on Sunday, January 3, 2027. The Baptism of the Lord follows on Sunday, January 10, as the USCCB calendar confirms. See the January 2027 US calendar for these dates, or our Advent guide for practical preparation.

FAQ
Is the Immaculate Conception a holy day of obligation in 2026?
Yes, in the United States, including Hawaii. It falls on Tuesday, December 8, 2026, and Catholics are required to attend Mass unless excused for a serious reason or dispensed.
Is Christmas 2026 a holy day of obligation?
Yes. Christmas is Friday, December 25, 2026, and a Mass on the evening of December 24 also satisfies the obligation.
Is January 1, 2027 a holy day of obligation?
Yes, in most US dioceses. Mary, Mother of God falls on Friday, January 1, 2027, so the Saturday or Monday exception does not apply. Hawaii does not observe January 1 as a holy day of obligation.
Why was the obligation sometimes lifted for January 1?
In the US Latin Church, the Mass obligation is lifted when January 1, August 15 or November 1 falls on a Saturday or Monday. January 1, 2027 is a Friday, so that rule does not lift the obligation. Hawaii has a separate exception.
Does a vigil Mass count?
Yes. Attending Mass in a Catholic rite on the evening before a holy day satisfies the obligation, as does attending on the day itself. Check your parish for its Mass schedule.
Do I have to abstain from meat on Friday, December 25 or January 1?
No abstinence is required by the usual Friday rule on December 25, 2026 or January 1, 2027. Both are solemnities, and canon 1251 exempts Fridays on which a solemnity falls.
Is Our Lady of Guadalupe (December 12) a holy day of obligation in the US?
No. It is a feast on Saturday, December 12, 2026, but it is not a holy day of obligation in the US.
